New Wildlife Advisor

24 January 2012

Laurie Jackson from Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex is working with local people, landowners and farmers, helping them to protect and encourage wildlife to thrive in their local area.

She has been appointed as Sussex Wildlife Trust’s new Landowner Advisor and is based at the Trust’s headquarters at Woods Mill nature reserve near Henfield.
Laurie’s main priority areas include the West Weald Landscape Project (WWLP), one of the most wooded areas of the UK covering some 240 square kilometres of West Sussex and south Surrey, and the Gatwick Greenspace Partnership (GGP) working in and around Horley, Horsham and Crawley, as well as Gatwick Airport.
As the Trust’s Landowner Advisor Laurie offers free wildlife advice and visits to horse owners, farmers or private landowners in the main project areas.

She says “I’m looking forward to working with local people who are interested in getting back in touch with nature and finding out how best to manage their land for wildlife. This year we’re planning to find out more about how dormice and birds are faring in the West Weald, as well as carrying out pond surveys to assess aquatic plants and animals.”

With a BSc in Biology from King’s College, London and an MSc in Countryside Management, Laurie has been working as a Conservation Officer at Sussex Wildlife Trust for the past three years. She has previously worked for the Wildlife Trust in Bedfordshire and with Butterfly Conservation Wales.
